Mountain House's First Special Needs Softball Team Takes 4th at Special Olympics Regionals

MOUNTAIN HOUSE — Aaria's Blue Elephant Softball Team, Mountain House's first-ever sports team for athletes with special needs, capped off a historic season this weekend with a fourth-place finish at the Special Olympics Regionals.

The milestone marks the team's first appearance on the regional stage since its founding, and community members say the result was as much about heart as it was about the scoreboard.

"Every swing of the bat, every run to base, and every smile proved that heart and determination have no limits," organizers said following the competition. "They didn't just play — they lit up the entire field with their unwavering spirit."

The team's young athletes competed through the regional bracket with support from a wide network of coaches, parents, and community backers. Head Coach Scott Pfister was singled out for what organizers described as a "selfless heart" in guiding and encouraging the players throughout the season.

Parents were also credited with sustaining the effort behind the scenes, providing what the team called "wholehearted support every step of the way."

The Blue Elephant program's community backers — referred to by organizers as "Community Champions" — include Supervisor Robert Rickman, Andy Su, Matt Disko, Ronna Green, and Bernice King Tingle, each recognized for helping elevate the team's visibility and mission of inclusion.

Founders and supporters say the team's debut regional run represents a broader milestone for inclusion in youth sports in Mountain House, with hopes that the program continues to grow in seasons ahead.

"Mountain House is forever proud of you," the team said in a message to its athletes following the event.
